KeNIC moves servers to East Africa

Kenya Network Information Centre (KeNIC)’s ‘We are .KE’ campaign has delivered a 60 per cent increase in local domain name registration since the beginning of 2015, from 32,000 domain registrations when the campaign began to now over 52,000 and the firm has now moved its servers to the East Africa Data Centre (EADC) to hit its 1m target.

KeNIC isworking fast to register and host more businesses locally to fulfill the govt’s mandate to have 75 per cent of registered businesses online by 2017.

“Previously Internet connectivity and dependence on generators during power outages were some of the challenges affecting KeNIC’s operations. These problems will now be a thing of the past as a result of collocating our servers to EADC,” said KeNIC CEO Abdalla Omari.

KeNIC also aims to encourage Kenyan businesses to opt for local domain names, and to keep their Internet data in Kenya, have a national identification, promote better local consumer engagement and improve search engine performance and increase data and download speeds for Kenyan users.

With the move, KeNIC can now focus on its core business of registering domains and creating awareness than investing more on cooling, power and data security said Dan Kwach, General Manager at EADC, a Tier 3 facility which is linked all Kenya’s local carriers, including Liquid Telecom Kenya.

EADC offers carrier-neutral, secure and reliable space for dedicated hosting, interconnect services, co-location, disaster recovery, network-based services, applications and cloud services to carriers, network providers and enterprises from across the continent.
